 2011 NHL PICKS

NHL Pick of the Week - Thursday, October 13

My pick of the week for the first full week in the 2011 NHL season is going to be a lock in my opinion. I am looking at the 8:35PM ET matchup between the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets. The Blackhawks are at home and are only a 1 1/2 goal favorite in the game. This is the same Jets team that was one of the worst teams in the East as the Atlanta Thrashers last year. This has the makings of a nightmare season for Winnipeg as they still have to play most of their games in the Eastern Conference.

The Jets lost their first game at home badly to the Montreal Canadiens 5-1 while Chicago beat up on the Dallas Stars at home 5-2. It is kind of hard to put a 2+ goal favorite this early in the season, but I see the final score of the game being 4-2 Blackhawks.

By the way, check this site out if you are looking for a good site to catch up on the US Junior Hockey leagues. You will find the latest news from your favorite AHL teams.

NHL Pick of the Week Recap

One out of two wasn't what I was hoping for to start things off. Apparently the Bruins were very inspired to play now that Marc Savard may be lost for the season with bad concussion. I thought for sure that Philly had this one in the bag, but the Bruins went on the road and destroyed the Flyers 5 to 1.

This hampered the joy of breaking through on my other pick when a goal was scored with a little more than 5 minutes left to put the Red Wings vs Wild game at 6 goals. This is after 5 goals were scored in the first half of the game and I thought this game was a lock. The final ended up being 5 to 1 Red Wings.

Top NHL News

Bill Guerin says that the NHL should outlaw hits to the head like the one delivered by his own teammate Matt Cooke to Boston Bruins center Marc Savard.

Savard suffered a grade 2 concussion from a shoulder-to-head hit from Cooke. Cooke was not suspended for the hit.

Also, this just in. 48 year old Chris Chelios is about to be in the NHL again after being called up from the Atlanta Thrashers AHL affiliate the Chicago Wolves.

Chelios is still three years younger than the oldest man ever to play in the NHL, Gordie Howe at age 51.

Update - Chelios was highlighted twice on ESPN and it looked like he was at least partially to blame for both goals scored in a 2-1 loss to Columbus.

NHL Pick of the Week - March 11th

Here we go! Time for my first NHL Pick of the Week. For this week, I am going to take the Over on tonight's game between Minnesota and Detroit, which is currently listed at 5.5 for the over/under.

This pick is fairly simple, Detroit needs points and are at home. There have been some problems in goal and each team has scored at least 2 goals on each other for the past 6 times the two teams have met. This would automatically mean that at least 5 goals have been scored each time.

One more bonus game to see if I can go two for two tonight. I'm also going to take Philadelphia -170 at home against Boston. Boston has been struggling to eek out wins and they are in the middle of a long road trip.

NHL is back from the Winter Olympics

What an unbelievable story book finish to the gold medal hockey game between the US and Canada. Parise with a goal with an empty net within the last half minute to tie the game. Crosby with the overtime game winner.

You couldn't have written the script any better for commissioner Bettman if you tried. Again the average person gets to see why hockey is such a great game, even if the NHL can't promote the game correctly.

Looks like the Red Wings might be healthy again and ready to make a playoff run, which could be bad news for the rest of the Western conference teams who hoped that they would miss the playoffs this year.

They finally snuck back into 8th place in the Western conference with a 3-2 win of the Avalanche on a late goal from Lidstrom. Full NHL action begins again tonight with 12 games on the schedule.
